The British & American reached a final settlement ‘Treaty of Paris’ on Sep 3,1783,ending hostilities of both Spain & France. Paris Treaty was favorable to United States in two ways-
1. Recognition of its independence.
2. Cession of its territory from British- from southern boundary of Canada to northern boundary of
Florida; Atlantic to Mississippi.
These were reasons to celebrate along with fall of colonial system, but not all were rejoicing with the departure of British from America, Some of them were as follows-
a.)American Loyalties- Almost third of the white population supported the British during the Revolution, among them were the office bearer in the imperial government, who stood to lose their position as result of independence.
b.)Merchant & Traders- They had close trade ties with the British in term of Tea trades and slave trading, with British embarking back home, merchant were at worse position due to the class struggle, with some surviving with the property loss and wealth dilution.
c.)Cultural & ethnic minorities- They lived in relative isolation, who feared that independence would jeopardize their security , Among them the Anglican of Virginia & Maryland with declaration of independence they strived for their existence.
d.)African American Population-Incident in South Carolina with the execution of Thomas Jeremiah, a free black by the Patriot, further aggravated the hope to attain freedom from slavery.Places such as Caribbean with maximum black population supported British in their effort, which narrowed their chance to attain freedom.
e.)Native American- During the Revolution, patriot tried to pursued Natives to remain neutral, but Native American were divided between British and American. Post Revolution their problem of white migration-expansion-confiscation of their tribal land at the hand of patriot further restrained their relation with the American, to add insult to the injury, Thomas Jefferson’s paternalistic attitude toward them was ultimate blow.
Thus, revolution was reformative with its class struggle, but on other hand Declaration of Independence divided people into two groups- Loyalties & Patriots. Democracy was established by curtailing –
1.The conventional property right
2.The immense property possessed by Tories(American Loyalist)
3.The center of Anglican Church(American loyalist)
But achieving the above objectives, Patriot practiced the same inhuman actions, thus the ‘Prey became the Predator’ leading some people to not rejoice the Independence but rather grieve it.
